A guide to lacquer sheens for furniture resfinishing

Lovely, luminous lacquer. We’ve all fallen in love with its glossy gorgeousness and power to transform even the dowdiest of “brown furniture” into something glamorous. But did you know that lacquer comes in a variety of sheens? Just like wall paint, lacquer is available in sheens from matte to glossy. Read on to learn more about the different sheens and how to choose the best sheen for your furniture refinishing project.

Selecting the right sheen for your furniture lacquering project

Matte

Matte (or flat) sheen has a low gloss level and provides a smooth, non-reflective surface. This finish is ideal for furniture that has a rustic look or heavy wood grain texture, as it can hide imperfections and give a natural, aged appearance. It is also a popular choice for mid century modern designs, as it creates a soft, velvety effect that complements minimalist aesthetics. A matte finish is the most forgiving when it comes to scratches and smudges which makes this sheen a good choice for heavy-use furniture.

Satin

Satin sheen has a slightly higher gloss level than matte, but still provides a subtle, elegant finish. We think of satin as the Goldilocks sheen - not too flat, not too shiny. This versatile finish is often used for pieces that need to strike a balance between visual interest and practicality, such as dining tables and desks.

Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss sheen has a higher gloss level than satin, making it more reflective; this is our most commonly used sheen. This finish provides a subtle shine that can add depth and dimension to furniture pieces, making them stand out in a room. Semi-gloss is an excellent choice for furniture that is frequently used, such as chairs and coffee tables, as it is resistant to stains and easy to wipe clean.

High-Gloss

High gloss sheen has the highest level of gloss and reflects the most light, giving furniture a bold, luxurious look. This sheen creates a sleek, polished finish which is ideal for smooth, closed-grain furniture. Because high gloss finishes show every fingerprint and smudge, be prepared to polish frequently or opt for furniture that won't get a lot of use or handling.
